Dynamics of Syrian Refugees in Lebanon's Agriculture Sector

This paper studies the dynamic of Syrian refugees in the agriculture sector in Lebanon and examines the extent to which the sector can take in refugees. The study mainly focuses on the informal ways and methods Syrian refugees practice to be able to access employment in the agriculture sector. It also focuses on the labor dynamics and fundamental challenges that control Syrian refugees’ jobs. The results show that the agriculture sector is able to take in refugees since it’s easy to access this sector due to its informality, its dependence on cheap labor, its reliance on investments from international organizations, and its ‘legality’.

Water-Energy Nexus Of Water And Wastewater Services In Lebanon

This paper provides a regional disaggregation analysis for the cities in Lebanon in terms of water and wastewater services. The analysis of electricity bills across regional water establishments shows the noticeable high cost of energy incurred to provide potable water. Around 20% of North Lebanon and Beirut and Mount Lebanon Water Establishments’ annual budget are dedicated for energy consumption for water service provision. This represents 33.6% of Beirut and Mount Lebanon Water Establishment’s operation and maintenance cost. In addition, the Bekaa Water Establishment cost of energy are higher with around 36% of their 2019 total budget was around 47% of the total operation and maintenance cost.

Lebanon Photovoltaic Power Potential

This solar map provides a summary of estimated solar photovoltaic (PV) power generation potential. It represents the average daily/yearly totals of electricity production from a 1 kW-peak grid-connected solar PV power plant, calculated for a period of 20 recent years (1999-2018). The PV system configuration consists of ground-based, free-standing structures with crystalline-silicon PV modules mounted at a fixed position, with optimum tilt to maximize yearly energy yield. The optimum tilt ranges from 26° to 33° towards the equator. Use of high efficiency inverters is assumed. The solar electricity calculation is based on high-resolution solar resource data and PV modeling software provided by Solargis. The calculation takes into account solar radiation, air temperature, and terrain, to simulate the energy conversion and losses in the PV modules and other components of a PV power plant. In the simulation, losses due to dirt and soiling was estimated to be 3.5%. The cumulative effect of other conversion losses is assumed to be 7.5%. The power plant availability is considered to be 100%. The underlying solar resource database is calculated from atmospheric and satellite data with a 30-minute time step, and a spatial resolution of 1000m.

Multidimensional poverty in Lebanon (2019-2021)

This study examines the multidimensional facets of poverty in Lebanon, for the period of 2019-2021. From a multidimensional poverty perspective, a household can be classified as poor if it is subjected to one or more of aspects (notably health care, medicine services, education, employment, housing and assets) of deprivation, even if it is not income poor. A household deprived of electricity, for example, is classified as deprived in this indicator, and possibly multidimensionally poor, regardless of its financial capacity to subscribe to a private generator. The same classification applies to households that are unable to obtain medicines, irrespective of their financial ability to purchase them. When measuring deprivation in Lebanon using this concept, the multidimensional poverty rate in 2021, according to the most recent household data sources, is 82 per cent (as for the Extreme multidimensional poverty it is estimated at 34 per cent). The analysis in this brief is derived from the Labor Force and Household Living Conditions Survey in Lebanon for the period 2018-2019. The survey was conducted by the Central Administration of Statistics, with support from the International Labor Organization and the European Union.

Lebanon: Children’s future on the line

BEIRUT, 1 July 2021 A series of mutually reinforcing crises, including a devastating recession, have left families and children in Lebanon in a dire situation, affecting just about every aspect of their lives, with few resources and virtually no access to social support. “With no improvement in sight, more children than ever before are going to bed hungry in Lebanon. Children’s health, education and their very futures are affected as prices are skyrocketing and unemployment continues to increase. More and more families are being forced to resort to negative coping measures, including sending their children to work in often dangerous and hazardous conditions, marrying off their young daughters or selling their belongings”, said Yukie Mokuo, UNICEF Representative in Lebanon. UNICEF Child-Focused Rapid Assessment was conducted by telephone among 1,244 households in April 2021.

Lebanese parliamentary election 2018 result data

A week after the 2018 parliamentary elections in Lebanon the Ministry of Interior (MOI) released the full detailed results in a static PDF format, severely limiting any possible analysis and cross linkage. Thus, in an effort to make this data available to the public in a machine-readable format, the Data Liberation Project (DLP) was launched, in cooperation with the National Democratic Institute (NDI) for the 2018 data and with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation (Fnf) for 2009 and 2005. The DLP project converted, cross-linked, and cleaned the data sourced from the official Ministry of Interior website, and made it publicly and freely available in machine-readable (XLS) format, a first in Lebanese history! The DLP is headed by Ibrahim Jouhari Website: www.128lebanon.com For any inquiries please contact: DLP.lebanon@gmail.com

FAO Mission to Assess the Impact of the Financial Crisis on Agriculture in the Republic of Lebanon

This report is based on information valid at the time of its finalization in April 2020. Since then, many economic and social developments have taken place in the country. On 4 August 2020, a devastating explosion occurred in the Beirut Port, leaving some 200 people dead and over 6 000 people injured. The blast destroyed parts of the port including the bulk terminal and main grain silo, ruined neighbourhoods in the vicinity and caused material damages in the greater Beirut area. The explosion added another dimension to a multi-faceted crisis Lebanon had already been facing, as the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the deterioration of economic conditions, with unemployment and poverty increasing and inflation rates skyrocketing. In July 2020 (last information available), consumer prices increased by over 112 percent compared to July 2019, while the food price inflation reached over 330 percent year on year. Nevertheless, the current report contains a valid description of the sector that can still be useful to inform policy decisions and provide background information on the agricultural sector in Lebanon.
