Lebanon’s Manufacturing Sector Inaction and Untapped Potential

Description: A study of Lebanon’s product space reveals that the country should focus on facilitating the development of new complex products, particularly in the machinery-electrical clusters and the chemical community. These products are attractive in terms of the tradeoff between distance and complexity and their potential strategic value in improving the position of the country.

Lebanese Innovation Economy Tech Startups 2018

Description: With over 100 investments having taken place between 2013-2016, Lebanon is one of the thriving capitals of digital innovation in the MENA. Thus, it is evident that Circular 331 boosted the startup scene, as witnessed with the rise of more startups, accelerators, venture capital, and ecosystem support programs. Lebanese tech startups face many obstacles in their entrepreneurial journey. To name a few: low availability of tech talent, the Lebanese regulatory and policy framework, and lack of access to customers and markets. However, it is not all doom and gloom; as there are many strengths to the ecosystem. The Lebanese startup scene has witnessed several exits, among which are Cleartag, Diwanee, and Shahiya.com. The thriving ecosystem has also witnessed a surge in coworking spaces and the emergence of a strong digital sector cluster in Beirut Digital District (BDD).

Spotlight on Youth in Lebanon

Description: In the midst of severe regional and internal pressures Lebanon has shown a remarkable, and perhaps unexpected, degree of resilience. A look at basic development indicators suggests the country has made massive gains towards human development in recent decades. However this cursory glance fails to illuminate the major blockages which continue to mire further progress and restrict the human capabilities of those in Lebanon. At the center of this situation are the youth of Lebanon who are personally confronted by many of these development challenges on a daily basis and whose empowerment is central to the well-being of the nation as a whole. This study aims to provide an updated analysis of the socio-economic situation of Lebanese youth and illustrate the wide development disparities between different groups within the country. The study also includes updates about the welfare and living conditions of non-Lebanese resident youth (mostly refugees). This paper serves to promote more factually informed decision making among all parties seeking to advance the human development status of Lebanon. This report was made possible through the generous support of the People of Japan through UNDP Regional Bureau of Arab States.

Lebanese Women In Leadership Positions: A Survey on National Perceptions

Description: In July 2017, Beyond Reform and Development, in partnership with Hivos, Peoples Unlimited launched a report on women’s political participation in Lebanon. The one-year study looked at women’s participation in unions and syndicates, political parties, the judicial system and civil society. The findings from the study were collected using several qualitative data collection tools (interviews, literature review, and focus groups). In 2018, a perceptions survey was conducted across Lebanon using a national representative sample to explore various perceptions of women’s participation in politics. The qualitative results revealed patterns in the challenges women face when engaging in politics, such as a lack of career development opportunities, negative stereotypes of women in politics and limits to their ability to engage in politics. As such, this quantitative survey serves to understand, highlight and address patterns in these perceptions, the characteristics of individuals opposing women participating in politics and the perceived challenges to women’s participation.

Workforce of the Future Middle East Edition

Description: Our report forms part of the ongoing research and analysis being carried out by PwC around the world to help us better understand the rapidly changing world of work and the challenges which organisations and individuals could face. We build on the influential 2018 PwC report, Workforce of the future: the competing forces shaping 2030, which outlined four potential models for the world of work in just over a decade from now. The ‘Four Worlds’ model was developed from 10 years of research by a team from PwC and the James Martin Institute for Science and Civilisation at the Said Business School in Oxford, as well as a worldwide survey of 10,000 people. The Workforce of the future, Middle East edition delves into perceptions of importance and risk in the Middle East, based on survey respondents and interviews with clients, and compares the regional findings with those globally.
